Thinking about hair

Today I was supposed to have a date with a potential client it was cancelled just in the morning. Of course I started to prepare myself yesterday to get some nice hair.  So, to not scare anyone away who hasn´t seen me before and plans on working with me I thought about a less dramatic hair do. After all the green dye is irritating enough, even in the creative field. I had seen this youtube tutorial on some blogs and thought that I could do something similar with pincurls:

Well, I was wrong. It looked nothing like her hair. I did 3 barrel curls on top and one row of flat pin curls all facing in the same direction. What I got was something like a page boy, a look I really like on other but that looks strange on me, I think. But I got a really nice bumper bang. I ended up with wearing a bouncy, voluminous ponytail with it that I really like.

Something I´ve been thinking about for some time now is Bettie bangs. I like the look but till now I shy away from it because I feel that it could become horribly clichée combined with the green and the plugs and the shirts I wear when I´m lazy (see pictures above). Also: What if I want to wear an authentic hat? Will it look silly? What about asymmetric hairdos? What about the natural wave I have? Oh my... I tried to immitate something like a Bettie bang to see what it would look like:

I´m not sure, no no. I kinda like this but it doesn´t look like betties so I think it doesn´t really give a good idea. But I like the excentric look of this lady I showed you earlier on this blog, the combination of straight bangs and curly everything else:

I need some reasonable opinions...

Oh, and something else. I´m still experimenting around with my eyebrows. I´m a natural dark blonde and my eyebrows show, so I´m searching for ways to get them dark, matching the dye. I´ve been using pencils so far but that´s not the perfect solution. Today I just used mascara and was surprised what a difference it makes. Is there anything similar like mascara for eyebrows you ladies could recommend?

The story of stuff

Why do I love shopping vintage and second hand? Why do I try to make things with my own hands?Because it looks good, because it´s cheap, because it´s unique and because it´s a little hug for planet earth. The following video focuses on the US, but it´s basically the same in every industrialized country. Economic growth is the word and exploitation is the result. That´s what "The story of stuff" is about:

How the mysterious hunchback becomes Frankensteins creature

Some time ago I bought the mysterious chubby hunchback dress of which I assumed it might have been a maternity dress. I mostly bought it because of the so so beautiful buckle as I´m absolutely no fan of velvet. You can see every little fluff and I feel like it pronounces my boobsters in a ridiculous way. But over the last week I put it on to see what it´d look like if it fit, decided that it was worth a try, checked the seams and buttons and stuff and came to the conclusion that someone with much worse sewing skills than mine altered the whole waist area. So, somebody gained some weight, huh? No really, that´s not a big problem. It only becomes a problem when you mess up a nice dress because of it, lady!
I seriously think about resizing it to my own proportions but I´m not sure where to start. The good thing is that the shoulders and chest area fit perfectly. But I think I´ll have to separate the skirt from the bodice to make this thing work. You know what the lazy me has to say about that? Blargh!

Meanwhile, here´s the dress "before":
I grabbed all the excess fabric around the waist for this picture, but you can´t tell how much it is. The tips of my thumbs kinda mark my waist and my fists are completely filled with black velvet. (Sounds romantic, but it scares me.)

I already moved the buttons back to their original positions inside
the perfect yellow circles. Don´t tell anyone I´m a designer, ok? ;)

Altered seams and what looks to me like belatedly added belt loops.

The collar is attached to the dress on one side, one closes it with
press buttons. It was sewn on totally wonky.

Sleeve detail. I´ll leave it like that.

Shoulder pad

I <3 that thing!

The butcher strikes back!
Maybe some of the more experienced sewing ladies have some good advice on how to start or if there´s something I have to think of when working with velvet?

I´m off to watch " The lady from Shanghai" :) now.

What I´m knitting

Some time ago, around Halloween to be exact, I stumbled across a skull bone knitting chart over at A pile of sheep and decided that I had to use it for something. I thought about a nice vintage cardigan with the skull on the back but couldn´t find a pattern in my size. So I went for this thing:

It´s exactly my size, easy to knit (I hope, never knitted a sweater before) and I don´t have the pattern for the err...wonderful? embroidery anyway. That´s what I´ve got so far:

Also on my to-do-list is this sweet little thing. The blanket, I mean:

Not vintage, but very classic I think. Right now I´m not sure if I really understood the instructions but I´ll start tomorrow and see what happens. As soon as I found everything out this should be a quick knit.

So much to do :). Are you knitting something at the moment?

Not much shopping lately least of the vintage kind. I did some yarn and fabric shopping instead for all the baby clothing that has to be made as not only my cousin but also the girlfriend of my Mr.s brother is pregnant.
But here´s what I bought for myself during the last 4 weeks or so:

It´s a vanity fair night gown, 60s I´d guess from the label. I got it for 1€ thinking that I could at least use the buttons for something because the last thing I need is a night gown. Right now I´m thinking about making a summer blouse out of it. Yes, that´s how strange I am.

This one´s hopefully gonna look great when worn with the vintage dirndl style outfit (preferably 30s or 40s) I still have to find/sew/get somehow... But as soon as it crosses my way I´m prepared!
The shirt I´m wearing is another recent purchase btw. It´s got my very own p**ping unicorn design printed on it. But it´s as unvintage as it gets ;)
